What is an Endodontist?

Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions that affect the innermost part of the tooth, known as the dental pulp. The dental pulp is a soft tissue located within the tooth's root canal, and it contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. Endodontists are dental professionals who specialize in performing procedures related to the dental pulp and the surrounding tissues.

The most common procedure associated with endodontics is root canal therapy. Root canal treatment is performed when the dental pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or trauma. During a root canal procedure, the endodontist removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the inner space of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent further infection. This allows the patient to retain their natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction.

Endodontists also diagnose and treat conditions such as dental abscesses (localized infections), cracked teeth, and traumatic injuries to the teeth that affect the pulp. Their expertise lies in preserving the health of the dental pulp and the surrounding structures to ensure the overall oral health of their patients.

In summary, endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the treatment and management of dental pulp-related issues, with the goal of saving and maintaining the natural tooth whenever possible.
